Narrative theories in opening sequence

Jaws Opening sequence narrative theory
Image
Jaws supports the equilibrium theory as a narrative theory because the opening sequence begins quietly and there is a feeling of no danger in the scene. The scene does not become violent even when the girl gets into the sea.
1. As the girl runs down to the beach, there is no imminent danger, and the music does not signify any danger.
2. As the girl gets into the water, the scenery suggests that something bad is about to happen but there is no sign of the shark or any suggestion of danger.
ImageImage3. As the girl fools about in the water, the music and the lighting suggests that something is about to happen, leaving the audience in suspense.
4. The under-water worm’s eye suggests that the shark is
about to attack; this is shown as the position and movement of the camera suggests that you are viewing the scene from the shark’s perspective.
5. When the shark finally attacks, the violent movements that the girl makes show build up to the climax. The music reinforces this as the music becomes more tense and
climatic.
