Titles openings

WWW: Images and imagery related to the film and related genres are shown.
EBI: if there were video also used, as this would better engage the audience.

WWW: there is video and the titles can be clearly seen against the grey background.
EBI: if the mes-en-scene was more relevant, possibly by including a better background and possibly film of people running.

The purpose of creating these short titles videos was to show several ways in which film titles can be displayed in a film's opening sequence.
Overall, the titles that were most effective were the titles for The Runner, I think this is due to the film using live footage, rather than just images as this would engage the audience more.
From my research, I conclude that titles are essential to a film as they explain what sort of genre and what type of film it is. This research will be used when making our opening sequence as our titles will be vital to how the audience view the film, the titles have to fit the genre and type of film.

Audience Research

Jason Bourne Poster

The Facebook page for Jason Bourne film.

A screenshot from the trailer with the trailer below.

Jason Bourne suggests that the film is targeted at an audience that has the demographics and physiographic that they are young(16 - 30) and middle-aged (30 - 50) males, in the middle class, that have watched the previous films, and that enjoy the spy-thriller / action-thriller genres.  It is suggested that the psychographics of the target audience include  This audience is targeted through the colours used in the background(black) and in the foreground(white) is imposing to the audience, with the font suggesting the film will be action-packed and imposing a sense of mystery to the audience.
By analysing the target audience of other thriller films, this makes us think about which group of people our thriller is to target. I have learnt that every film has a specific target audience and also that our film should have a specific target audience, therefore we should spend some time, while planning, to asses who our target audience is going to be.

Iconic sounds used in the crime-thriller genre

There are many iconic sounds used throughout the duration of a typical crime-thriller. I will be discussing iconic sound effects and how we can use them.

Firstly, the gunshot sound effect is an extremely popular sound effect utilised in many different thrillers. This particular sound effect is most commonly found in our chosen sub genre, crime-thrillers. This sound effect is usually accompanied by someone firing the gun which is shown on-screen. This is a very common effect and can be found in films such as The Godfather, Inception and The Taking of Pelham 123. We may want to incorporate this sound effect into our sequence as it could raise the tension of our Opening Sequence drastically.

Another sound effect commonly used is the heavy breathing sound effect. This is perfect for a crime thriller as it represent someone is in danger or that someone is vulnerable. Heavy breathing is usually used as openers in thriller films as it increases the intensity in the scene because the viewers would have no idea of why the protagonist or the victim is running therefore this makes the atmosphere more intense. Heavy breathing is used in thrillers such as Hard Candy and Hush.

Lastly, ambient sound effects such as rain littering on a window or a tap dripping are extremely common within crime thrillers. These sounds are usually played on their own to create an intense atmosphere. For example, you may hear a tap dripping while someone is hiding from their attacker. This is utilised well in Hush, in which victim is being chased by her attacker and the close he gets to her, the loud the tap dripping becomes. This keeps the audience engaged and on the edge of their seat. We could incorporate this into our opening sequence to make our OS more exciting.

Researching these sounds, I have found many which we can effectively use in our opening sequence. We could the effects mentioned above or we could even record our film to make them seem more natural for when we implement them into our Opening Sequence. I chose the sound effects above as they are relevant for our chosen sub genre and are easy to find as they're so common. If we want to receive top grades, we will have to utilise lots of different sound effects to keep the audience engaged.

Creative camera shots

In the first shot, we like the white bringing out the emphasis of the character's facial features. We can link this to our opening sequence as it can show the start of a plan that is about to become action.

In the second shot, we like the blurred and un-blurred effect in which the foremost character can be seen clearly, while the character in the distance is blurred. We can link the second shot to our opening sequence as it can be used as one of the shots during our opening sequence.

In the third shot, we enjoy the colour contrast and highlights on the shoes as this shows contrast between the grey ground and the black shoes and leggings. We can link this shot type to our opening sequence as it can be used during the sequence to show a character being dragged along the ground by another character, showing a point-of-view shot.

1. we want the audience to feel inquisitive and drawn into the plot of the film.

2. we want the audience to know that the girl has been kidnapped.

3. we want the audience to have the following big question: who is the kidnapper?

Audience Research; Girl on The Train

I have chosen to analyse what the target audience may be for the movie The Girl On The Train, and I have come to the conclusion that the movie is targeted mainly at women in their mid 20's and early 30's who are succeeders and resigned, who may work part time or commute daily therefore they are aware of the daily commute which may have something to do with the title, when it comes to psychographics and here are my reasons why.  Firstly the movie poster is used to advertise the movie and target the audience because it is a woman on the poster which is in her late 20's to know her story because they want to feel empathy and they probably would understand how she feels.
The website of the movie is advertising the movie and targeting the audience because it introduces the characters and there are pictures of the characters that show them a little bit more clearly than the trailer, these pictures include the male characters that the women which are most likely the target audience may like and even be attracted to them. The trailer gives an insight to what the movie is about and focuses on the fact that the two main characters in the movie are women which may be the reason because this movie is targeted at women because it focuses on a woman who has witnessed a crime and the victim which is a woman.
The social media sites target the audience and advertises the movie because it is something that most people now a days use and so easily could be shown to come up in people's feed or suggested videos to watch on YouTube or maybe even pages on Facebook that they would most likely be interested in.

Audience research

Inferno is made for the age of 15-30 year olds, which are male and are middle management. The psychographic group that Inferno fits in to is explorers as they would enjoy more adventurous films.
The poster has Tom Hanks in the centre, with a red and black mysterious spiral behind him. It is written by the same person who wrote the famous enigma code film, "The Da Vinci Code" showing that this film is most likely an enigma code film as well. The Trailer shows the enigma code film as well by the plot developing. This targets the middle management and the psychographic group because it shows adventure which their target audience is. Furthermore the social media page shows the mysterious theme from the thumbnail of the video which is black and white apart from the red writing on it. This shows adventure even more
